Fritz Mueller Fellowship Campaign Reaches Its Goal

Thanks to all the alumni and other contributors who helped us meet our goal of raising $250,000 for the Mueller Fellowship.  Fritz and his colleagues are gratified by the generous donations which enabled us to award the first fellowship in 2007.  The earnings are matched by the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation to provide a fellowship with a full stipend and tuition waiver.  Preference in awarding the fellowship will be given to graduate students studying the organization and competitive performance of the U.S. food system.

The first fellowship was awarded to Xiaowei Cai, a dissertator writing on the dynamics of international cartels.  Congratulations, Xiaowei!

Professor Willard F. "Fritz" Mueller has had a career distinguished by its influence on countless students, contributions to the field of industrial economics, and influence on antitrust policy. Between 1961 and 1985, Fritz was among the most influential economists in the U.S. in the broad policy area of antitrust and market regulation. Among other things, in the 1960s he was primarily responsible for creating the Federal Trade Commission's Pre-Merger Notification Program; he subsequently assisted Congress in developing the Hart-Scott-Rodino Pre-Merger Notification Act of 1973, the most important antitrust legislation since 1950. Because of Fritz's leadership, the UW Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics has been a national leader in research on the organization and competitive performance of the U.S. food system, and the role of antitrust policy, since the early 1970s.

We encourage prospective graduate students interested in studying the U.S. food system to apply for the fellowship. Simply state your interest in your application essay.  More information appears in the section on graduate admissions.
