Recent expansion of the Federal Statistical Research Data Center (FSRDC) network, and current federal legislative responses to the report of the Federal Commission on Evidenced Policy, have created new opportunities to measure and study the structure of off-farm food and agricultural industries (FAI). In this workshop, I will discuss these changes briefly, and present related research-in-progress that examines: (1) inter-temporal changes in the locus of agricultural production activities across “farms” and (off-farm) firms, (2) microstructure of knowledge production in university-based agricultural science, and (3) location and performance of FAI firms that operate in rural areas. I will also discuss briefly, and offer strategic advice, with respect to navigating the administrative process for accessing FSRDC data through WiscRDC (http://rdc.wisc.edu).
