Marin Skidmore PhD ’20 and Kait Sims PhD x’22, receive grant

Led by Holly Gibbs, faculty in the Department of Geography and Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, the GLUE lab was one of twelve recipients of a 2021 seed grant from UW-Madison Global Health Institute. The lab will investigate the impact on health in the Brazilian Amazon due to agricultural intensification and deforestation practices in the Amazon. The project has roots back to the time Skidmore spent conducting research in Brazil. Skidmore, a co-PI on the project, often heard locals talk of a relationship between the introduction of soybean production and the emergence of cancer. The team will evaluate pesticide exposure and cancer rates using 30 years of national data.
