I am an Associate Professor in the Dept. of Agricultural & Applied Economics at UW-Madison and Director of Graduate Studies. My research fields include natural resource and environmental economics, economic development, and law and economics.

Much of my research focuses on the role that property rights, governance, and public policies play in affecting the extent to which individuals and societies benefit from their natural resource endowments. Topics include conflict minerals, oil booms and busts, land fragmentation and conservation, renewable energy, wildlife and fishery regulations, and the economies of indigenous communities.
