{"id":1102,"date":"2020-06-02T04:59:58","date_gmt":"2020-06-02T04:59:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aae.wisc.edu\/pdmitchell\/?p=1102"},"modified":"2020-06-03T21:15:57","modified_gmt":"2020-06-03T21:15:57","slug":"determining-the-tons-of-silage-in-silo-bags-for-cfap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aae.wisc.edu\/pdmitchell\/2020\/06\/02\/determining-the-tons-of-silage-in-silo-bags-for-cfap\/","title":{"rendered":"Determining the Tons of Silage in Silo Bags for CFAP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kevin Jarek, Liz Binversie, Bill Halfman, Paul Mitchell<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aae.wisc.edu\/pdmitchell\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/06\/Silo-Bags.pdf\">PDF Version<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This tool helps a farmer calculate the tons of silage in bunker silos and convert it to its grain equivalent for including in 2019 production for determining CFAP payments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Begin by downloading the Silo Bag Capacity spreadsheet: <a href=\"https:\/\/fyi.extension.wisc.edu\/forage\/files\/2014\/02\/BagSiloCapacity1-31-12.xls\">https:\/\/fyi.extension.wisc.edu\/forage\/files\/2014\/02\/BagSiloCapacity1-31-12.xls<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Step 1: In the yellow cells, enter the <u>Silage Dry Matter Content<\/u>, <u>Dry Matter Density<\/u>, <u>Bag Diameter<\/u>, and <u>Silage Length<\/u>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Silage Dry Matter Content is typically 35% meaning wet silage is 65% moisture.<\/li>\n<li>The DM density of the feed ranges from 11-15 lbs of DM per cubic foot. Densities will vary based on forage moisture, length of cut, and many other factors. <u>A value of 13 lbs DM per cubic foot<\/u> is often used as an average value.<\/li>\n<li>The Silage Length equals Bag Length \u2013 (Plastic Length \u2013 2 x Diameter). For example, the silage length for a 10 ft bag that is 150 long is 150 \u2013 (2 x 10) = 130 ft.<\/li>\n<li>For a bag that was partially fed on January 15, 2020, reduce this value by the length of bag that had already been fed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Step 2: In the pink cells, read Tons Dry Matter.<\/p>\n<p>Step 3: Divide Tons Dry Matter by 0.35 to convert silage tons of DM to standard 65% moisture.<\/p>\n<p>Step 4: Multiply by the FSA conversion factor.
